DANIELLE GAY

Dani is a seasoned professional with over 10 years of experience in the magazine industry. She’s the voice behind Reservations, a weekly Substack where she delves into the complexities of dating, relationships, love, and loss. Through her thoughtful writing, Dani creates a space for women to reflect on their personal journeys, sharing stories and insights that resonate deeply with her readers.

What's your name and what do you do?

I’m a Sydney-based journalist, writer and editor who has worked in the magazine world for the past 11 years—at Vogue, InStyle and Gritty Pretty. I’m also the founder of Reservations, a community for women and a weekly Substack newsletter about dating, relationships, love and loss. Part of this offering includes a Book Club, where we can connect in-person and read stories by women, for women, about women.

What is your personal approach to your style?

It’s very relaxed. I lean towards tailoring, with timeless silhouettes, and I avoid colour.

How would you describe the aesthetic?

Classic.

Take us through your creative process, how do you find focus and what drives you?

I really like Julia Cameron’s Morning Pages, where you write three pages of longhand, stream of consciousness writing. It’s done first thing in the morning and it kind of clears out the mind so you can access the more creative parts of your brain. I’m nearly finished with a Masters of Creative Writing and early on, my supervisor suggested something called an Artist's Date, where you go on regular dates with your inner artist as a reward for writing practice. I take myself to an art gallery or to a movie, something that is creative and purely for me.

"So much of writing isn’t actually writing—it’s walking, swimming, watching a film, having a conversation. This forms a really important part of my creative process."

Who, what or where is inspiring you right now?

  • Reading: Joan Didion’s work. She is such an inspiration to me, both as a journalist and author, and so I’m working through her entire oeuvre. Start with Slouching Towards Bethlehem if you’ve never read her.
  • Listening: I love listening to the conversations former Goop staffer Elise Loehnen has on her podcast, Pulling the Thread.
  • Watching: The Bear. I think this show is so brilliant that I’m currently rewatching it. I love niche vocabularies and so the cooking jargon is fascinating to me. My best friend and I also recently started a culture club, where we watch one film every week - it’s been expanding my knowledge of cinema. My favourite pick of late is Triangle of Sadness (2022).

In a world where digital presence is crucial, how do you maintain authenticity in your online?

Vulnerability. To write about love and relationships and to honour my role as community builder in this space requires me to be vulnerable. My intention is to help people connect back to themselves as they attempt to connect with others and so I always try to authentically demonstrate the many ways I am working towards the same thing myself.

How do you quiet your mind, and find calm in the chaos?

I have a consistent meditation practice, which involves a silent, mantra-based technique called Vedic meditation. I sit down to meditate twice a day for 20 minutes and while the aim isn’t actually to quieten the mind, I have found it calms my nervous system and refines my way of thinking.

Tell us about a project something you’re working on thats exciting you right now?

I have so many ideas for Reservations - too many to share here! I would love to support women through different stages of their relationships - dating, heartbreak and everything in between - and so I am currently working through the many ideas pulsing in my head. You might have to watch this space.
